Random Word Party Games for Groups of Any Size
November 1, 2026
A party game needs simple rules, no props and a way to include everyone. Random words cover all three: you can start a round in seconds from a phone, and the words keep the game different each time. These five work for six to thirty people.
1. Word draft
Show six random words. Players take turns picking one word each until all are gone, then have two minutes to connect their words in a single sentence. The group votes on the best sentence. It works well as an opener because everyone participates at the same time.
2. One-minute pitch
Each player draws a random word and has one minute to pitch it as a product, a movie or a holiday. A word like "umbrella" becomes a luxury travel brand in the right hands. Score by applause, and keep pitches short so no one waits too long.
3. Forbidden letter
Pick a letter nobody may say, then give players random words to describe without it. The pressure to avoid a single sound produces fast, funny mistakes. Start with a rare letter such as Q or Z, then move to a common one like E for a hard round.
4. Mime chain
Line up four players. The first sees a random word and mimes it to the second, who mimes what they understood to the third, and so on. The last player says the word. The distance between the first word and the final guess is the whole game.
5. Secret word
One player secretly receives a random word while the others get a different one on the same theme. Everyone gives a one-word clue, then the group votes on who had the odd word. It needs at least five players and plays well in under ten minutes.
Tips for the host
Generate the words before the party and keep the family-friendly filter on if children are present. Choose common nouns and verbs for mixed ages, and allow one skip per player. Short rounds of five to ten minutes keep the energy up better than a long game.
