Fun Words for Charades: Easy to Hard

Charades is all about action, so verbs and vivid scenes work best — the opposite of Pictionary, where concrete nouns rule. Here's a list you can use tonight, sorted by how tricky each word is to act out, plus the handful of standard gestures that make any group instantly better at the game.

Notice the pattern: easy words are physical actions your whole body can show. Medium words involve a subtler motion or an invisible prop. Hard words are mental states — to act 'hesitate', you have to perform reaching for something and pulling back, twice. That extra layer of storytelling is what separates casual play from the rounds people talk about afterwards.

The gestures every group should agree on

Before the first round, agree on the classics: hold up fingers for the number of words, tap your forearm for the number of syllables, cup your ear for 'sounds like', pinch finger and thumb for 'small word' (a, the, of), and wave toward yourself for 'keep guessing, you're close'. Thirty seconds of setup saves endless mid-round confusion — and lets you use harder words, because the actor can break them into syllables.

Formats to keep a party going

For groups of six or more, play in two teams with a fixed timer (60 seconds works; 90 for kids). For smaller groups, try 'popcorn' style: whoever guesses correctly acts next. Themed decks are another easy upgrade — an all-animals round is great with kids, while an all-feelings round gets very funny with adults who have to distinguish 'annoyed' from 'furious' without speaking.

Keep the rounds going

When your slips run out, generate a fresh batch of random verbs and have each player draw one blindly. Mix in a few category words — animals or feelings — to vary the challenge. Because the words are random, nobody can accuse the other team of stacking the deck, and you'll never recycle last week's list.
