Palindrome Words and Sentences: Examples by Length

October 4, 2026

A palindrome reads the same forwards and backwards. "Level", "radar" and "noon" are palindrome words; "never odd or even" is a palindrome sentence once you ignore spaces; 12321 is a palindrome number. The three share one rule — mirror symmetry — but they behave very differently when you try to find or invent them, which is why most lists mix them up. This guide keeps them apart, starts with word lists you can use right away, and ends with a method for building your own.

Three-letter and four-letter palindrome words

  • mom
  • dad
  • pop
  • wow
  • eye
  • gag
  • pip
  • tot
  • bob
  • nun
  • noon
  • deed
  • peep
  • toot
  • sees
  • boob

Short palindromes are the easiest to find because the rule is almost trivial: a three-letter palindrome only needs its first and last letters to match, so any word shaped like A-B-A qualifies. Four-letter ones need two matching pairs (A-B-B-A), which is why they cluster around doubled middle letters such as "deed" and "peep". These are the right words for young children, because the symmetry is visible at a glance.

Five-letter to seven-letter palindrome words

  • level
  • radar
  • civic
  • refer
  • kayak
  • madam
  • rotor
  • stats
  • tenet
  • solos
  • minim
  • reviver
  • repaper
  • deified
  • racecar
  • rotator

From five letters up, palindromes get noticeably rarer. Odd lengths are far more common than even ones, because an odd-length word has a free middle letter that doesn't need a partner: in "civic" and "kayak" the central letter is simply the pivot. A useful side effect for Wordle players is that five-letter palindromes are a small, memorable set, so recognising the shape can rule candidates in or out quickly.

Longer palindrome words

  • redivider
  • rotavator
  • detartrated
  • tattarrattat

Beyond eight letters, everyday palindromes nearly disappear. "Redivider" and "rotavator" are real dictionary entries; "detartrated" is a chemistry term; and "tattarrattat", coined by James Joyce in Ulysses for the sound of a knock, is usually quoted as the longest palindromic word in the Oxford English Dictionary at twelve letters. Once you leave this short list you are in invented-word territory, which is exactly where palindrome sentences take over.

Palindrome sentences and phrases

  • A man, a plan, a canal: Panama
  • Was it a car or a cat I saw?
  • Never odd or even
  • No lemon, no melon
  • Madam, in Eden, I'm Adam
  • Step on no pets

Sentence palindromes ignore spaces, capitals and punctuation, and they are judged letter by letter, not word by word. That relaxed rule makes them much easier to invent than a long single-word palindrome, which is why there are thousands of them. Word-by-word palindromes also exist — "You can cage a swallow, can't you, but you can't swallow a cage, can you?" reads the same by words, not letters — and they are a different, harder puzzle.

How to check or build a palindrome

To test a candidate, strip everything that isn't a letter, lowercase it, and compare the first letter with the last, the second with the second-to-last, and so on toward the middle; the first mismatch means it is not a palindrome. To build one, work from both ends at once: pick a pivot (a single letter, or a doubled pair for even length), then wrap matching letters around it and ask at each step whether the letters so far still look like the start of a word. Building outward from a pivot is the reason odd-length words dominate every list above.

What is the longest palindrome word in English?

In everyday dictionaries the longest common palindromic words are "redivider" and "rotavator" at nine letters. "Tattarrattat", coined by James Joyce, has twelve letters and is usually cited as the longest in the Oxford English Dictionary.

Is a number like 121 a palindrome?

Yes. A palindrome number reads the same in both directions, such as 121 or 12321. The same mirror rule applies to words, sentences and numbers; only the symbols change.

Do spaces and punctuation count in a palindrome sentence?

No. Palindrome sentences are checked on letters only, ignoring spaces, capitals and punctuation, so "Never odd or even" qualifies even though the words themselves do not mirror.
